Bulletin Board Systems - usually run from computer
geeks' basements - were the only affordable way to
communicate online. CompuServe and GEnie, the
two "big" commercial services cost $35 an hour to
use during daytime hours. Lots of people typed in all capital
letters back then, too. And for good reason. Some computers
didn't have a lowercase option. Even using local
bulletin boards could get expensive, though because of
telephone toll charges. Here's part of a typical
bulletin board message I had saved and printed out.
